  3.              Fiery Soviet Space Debris Lights Up Night Sky

  5.     On Friday night, March 25th, the UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, 
  6. Washington received three phone calls from Beaumont, Texas and parts 
  7. of Louisiana reporting a fiery aerial display that turned out to be a 
  8. Soviet satellite re-entry.  The following report was printed in the 
  9. Seattle Post-Intelligencer March 26th:

  11.     "Soviet space debris bigger than a railroad boxcar re-entered the 
  12. atmosphere in a brilliant atmospheric fireworks display last night 
  13. that triggered phone calls from curious skywatchers in Texas, 
  14. Oklahoma, and Arkansas."
  15.  
  16.     "'I saw a meteorite once that was pretty spectacular, but this one 
  17. jsut blew that away.  This was the most amazing celestial event I've 
  18. ever seen,' said Chuck Farr, 33, of Round Rock, Texas."

  20.     "'It was part of a package that was sent up a couple of days ago 
  21. from the Soviet Union,' said Lt. Col. Ivan Pinnell, a spokesman for 
  22. the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD."

  24.     An interesting sidelight to this story emerged when Robert Gribble 
  25. of the UFO Reporting Center called NORAD to confirm the satellite re-
  26. entry.  After the Major on the Public Information Desk learned who he 
  27. was and what organization he represents, he asked, "How come you guys 
  28. aren't over at the conference in Arkansas?"
  29.  
  30.     Bob told him that he was too busy to go.  "Yeah, we're too busy, 
  31. too," he replied with a laugh.
